Ever thought why your clothes, especially light-coloured ones get stained near your armpits? They occur by a reaction between sweat and antiperspirant ingredients (products that you use to reduce sweat). While antiperspirant products are slightly different from deodorants, they are marketed in the same way. Hence, you may not figure out a major difference between them. While they help you in reducing body odour they can leave your clothes stained for life. Because many antiperspirants contain aluminium which creates a yellowish stain on white and light-coloured clothes.

If you will not treat them then can settle permanently. So, we will tell you how to get rid of armpit stain stains and odour from clothes. We will quickly see some crucial things to do before stain removal and then jump to see how to remove armpit stains and odour from clothes.

Things To Do Before Removing Armpit Stains From Clothes

  • Read the garment care label: Don’t forget to check the garment care label of your clothes before using any stain remover. Sometimes manufacturers put clear warnings on the labels such as “do not use bleach”, “do not use hot water” and most commonly “dry clean only”. You must have a clear knowledge of what not to use on a garment before treating a stain.
  • Do a spot test: No matter how sure you are about using a stain remover, never skip a patch test or spot test. Apply the stain remover on a hidden area of the fabric, for example, inside the collar or inside the hem. Wait for 10-15 minutes. Check the fabric, if it has any adverse reactions like discolouration or slight tear, you should not use that particular stain remover further.

Caution: We do not recommend using these stain remover methods on extremely delicate fabrics like silk.

Best for white clothes: Hydrogen Peroxide is a colour-safe bleach, hence, you can use it on white-coloured clothes to remove armpit stains.

Best for odour removal: Baking soda is widely used as a deodorizer in laundry. Hence, this method will work well for removing armpit stains.

To check where not to use hydrogen peroxide you can visit our blog – All about using bleach in laundry. Baking soda also helps in removing odours so this method will help you get rid of sweat odours as well. Now, let’s see how you can use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide:

  • Flip the garment inside out and place it in a bucket or tub.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and water in a bowl using an old toothbrush or spoon until there are no visible chunks. (You can increase the quantity if the stain is spread on a larger area).
  • Boil water and pour it directly onto the stain to loosen the fabric (Make sure the garment care label doesn’t restrict hot water usage).
  • Apply the stain remover paste onto the stain using a toothbrush.
  • Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Rub it with the same toothbrush in a circular motion until the stain is visible.
  • Rinse the stained area or the whole garment with clean and cold water.
  • Wash the garment as usual to remove the residue of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

  • Best for coloured clothes: Vinegar contains mild acetic acid which is effective for stain removal but doesn’t cause discolouration. Hence, it is safe to use on coloured clothes.
  • Best for odour removal: Vinegar is a natural deodorizer, hence, it is best to remove body and sweat odours from clothes.

Let’s see how to use vinegar to remove armpit stains and odour from clothes:

  • Remove armpit stains using white distilled vinegar
  • Turn the garment inside out and put it in a bucket or tub (it should have enough space to soak the garment).
  • Mix 1/3 cup (approximately 80 ml) of vinegar in a bowl and the same quantity of water in a bowl.
  • Pour this liquid slowly onto the stained area to submerge it in the mixture.
  • Leave the garment for 30 minutes to let it soak in the vinegar.

Best for white and coloured clothes: The citric acid present in lemon is good for stain removal and it can be used on coloured clothes too as it doesn’t cause discolouration.

Best for odour removal: The citric acid breaks down stain-causing elements which is the source of odour too. Hence, lemon can remove armpit odour.

Now, let’s see how to use lemon for removing armpit stains and odour from clothes:

  • You will need at least half a cup of lemon juice. So, squeeze at least 6-7 lemons in a glass and mix an equal quantity of water. Then, add 1 teaspoon of salt to the lemon.
  • Put the garment in a bucket or tub.
  • Pour the lemon juice directly onto the stain.
  • Rub it gently in a circular motion using a toothbrush for 3-5 minutes. The stain will vanish slowly.
  • Leave the garment soaked in lemon juice for 1 hour. It will help with sweat odour.
  • Rinse the stained area or the whole garment with clean and cold water.
  • Wash the garment as usual.

If you think you don’t have time for removing stains at home, don’t worry.

Remove armpit stains using oxygen bleach and ammonia

Only for white clothes: Ammonia works great on yellow armpit stains, however, it can cause discolouration. Hence, this method is ideal only for white clothes.

Best for odour removal: Household ammonia is used to remove harsh smells. Hence, it can definitely remove mild armpit odour.

We recommend using this method only when nothing else works on the stain as frequent use of ammonia can weaken the fibres of your fabric. Do check the garment care label to see if there is a specific warning not to use ammonia. If you want to know which clothes can tolerate oxygen bleach, click here.

Pro-tip: Use bleach in a well-ventilated area to ensure as the smell of bleach may cause dizziness to some people. Also, wear rubber gloves as they may not react well with your skin.

  • Mix two tablespoons of oxygen-based bleach and household ammonia in a plastic or non-metal bowl.
  • Put the stained garment in a bucket or tub.
  • Dip a soft-bristled brush or toothbrush into the mixture.
  • Rub the stain for 1-2 minutes gently in a circular motion.
  • Leave the garment for 10 minutes. The stain will vanish at this stage.
  • Rinse and wash your garment, as usual, to get rid of ammonia and oxygen bleach residue.

Caution: Do not use chlorine bleach with ammonia, it can cause deadly fumes which is hazardous to health.

In case the stain doesn’t go away completely after trying any of these methods, you can repeat the stain removal process.

Key Takeaway

First things first, you should never ignore a slight yellowish shade emerging near the armpit area. This may not seem too visible in the beginning, however, with constant use of antiperspirant products it can permanently settle on your clothes.

While it may not be too visible on dark-coloured clothes, it will surely ruin your white and light-coloured clothes. Hence, it is always better to treat such stains as soon as possible. You can choose any of the 4 ways explained above in the blog depending on the garment care label and your convenience.

Just in case your garment is labelled as “dry clean only” or the stain does not go away after trying any or all of these methods repeatedly, you can take the help of professional dry cleaners.

You can send such garments to your nearest Tumbledry store as well. We have special chemicals to treat all types of stains and we ensure 100% fabric preservation as well. So, you can make a decision about your clothes without worrying.
